Final Grade Calculator
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the final exam affect my grade?
Your final exam contributes to your overall grade based on its weight. The formula is:
- Final Grade = (Current Grade x (100 - Final Weight) + Final Exam Score x Final Weight) / 100
- For example, if your current grade is 85%, the final is worth 20%, and you score 90% on the final:
- Final Grade = (85 x 80 + 90 x 20) / 100 = (6800 + 1800) / 100 = 86%
The higher the weight of the final exam, the more it can raise (or lower) your overall grade.
What if I need over 100% on the final?
If the calculator shows you need more than 100% on your final exam, it means your target grade is not achievable with a perfect exam score. Your options include:
- Lower your target grade to something achievable
- Ask your instructor about extra credit opportunities
- Check if any other assignments can be revised or redone
- Focus on getting the highest possible grade given your situation
Use the "What If? Scenarios" table to see what final grade you can realistically achieve.
How do weighted grades work?
Weighted grades assign different importance to different parts of your coursework:
- Example: Homework 30%, Midterms 30%, Final Exam 40%
- Your "current grade" in this calculator represents everything except the final exam
- The current grade weight is automatically calculated as (100% - Final Exam Weight)
- This means if your final is worth 25%, your current work counts for 75% of your grade
Make sure you know your course's grading breakdown to use this calculator accurately.
How do I calculate a weighted average?
A weighted average multiplies each value by its weight, then divides by the total weight:
- Formula: Weighted Average = (Value1 x Weight1 + Value2 x Weight2 + ...) / Total Weight
- Example: If homework (85%) is worth 40% and exams (78%) are worth 60%:
- Weighted Average = (85 x 40 + 78 x 60) / 100 = (3400 + 4680) / 100 = 80.8%
This calculator uses this formula to determine what final exam score you need to reach your target grade.
