Pool Volume Calculator

For accurate measurements:

• Length/Width: Measure at the water line from inside wall to inside wall
• Depth: Use a pool pole or measuring stick from water surface to pool floor
• Variable depth pools: Measure at the shallowest and deepest points
• Kidney/Freeform: Measure the longest and widest points, then use the A+B formula

Common residential pool sizes:

• Small (10x20 ft): ~5,000-8,000 gallons
• Medium (15x30 ft): ~12,000-18,000 gallons
• Large (20x40 ft): ~25,000-35,000 gallons
• Above-ground round (15 ft): ~4,000-5,000 gallons
• Above-ground round (24 ft): ~13,000-15,000 gallons

Fill time depends on your water source flow rate:

• Garden hose (9-17 GPM): Small pool: 8-15 hours, Large pool: 24-48 hours
• Multiple hoses: Can cut time in half
• Water truck delivery: 6,000-8,000 gallons per truck load
• Fire hydrant fill: Requires permit, much faster but has fees

Tip: Fill overnight during off-peak hours for lower water rates in some areas.

Water costs vary by location, but typical estimates:

• US Average: $0.003-$0.006 per gallon
• 10,000 gallon pool: $30-$60
• 20,000 gallon pool: $60-$120
• 30,000 gallon pool: $90-$180

Note: Some areas charge higher rates for large water usage. Check with your water utility for actual rates.

For kidney and freeform pools, use the approximation formula:

• Measure the longest length (A)
• Measure the widest width at the widest point (B)
• The calculator uses: Volume = (A + B) x Length x Average Depth x 0.45 x 7.5
• This provides a reasonable estimate, though actual volume may vary by 5-10%
