Frequently Asked Questions
How does daylight saving time affect conversions?
Our converter automatically accounts for daylight saving time (DST):
- The calculator uses the IANA time zone database for accurate DST transitions
- DST rules vary by country and region - some don't observe it at all
- Conversions are calculated based on the specific date you enter
- Time zone abbreviations will change (e.g., EST to EDT) during DST periods
What is UTC and how does it relate to GMT?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) and GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) explained:
- UTC is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks
- GMT is a time zone while UTC is a time standard - they share the same time
- UTC does not observe daylight saving time
- All other time zones are expressed as offsets from UTC (e.g., UTC-5 for EST)
Why does the date sometimes change during conversion?
Date changes occur due to time zone differences:
- When converting to a timezone that's many hours ahead, midnight may be crossed
- Example: 10 PM in New York is 8 AM the next day in Tokyo
- The converter will indicate "Next day" or "Previous day" when this happens
- This is normal behavior when there's more than 12 hours difference
How accurate are the time zone conversions?
Our converter ensures high accuracy through:
- Using the Intl API which follows IANA timezone database standards
- Automatic handling of daylight saving time transitions
- Support for historical and future date conversions
- Regular updates to timezone rules as countries change their policies
